What a SWIFT/BIC code is
The BIC (Business Identifier Code), commonly called SWIFT code, identifies a bank or institution in international payments. It has 8 or 11 characters: 4 letters for the institution, 2 for the country, 2 for the location, and an optional 3 for the branch. XXX, or no branch code at all, means the head office.
For a transfer in euros within SEPA the IBAN is enough. For a transfer outside the area, or in another currency, the sending bank needs the beneficiary's IBAN or account number plus the BIC of the receiving bank. A wrong BIC delays the transfer or sends it back, with fees charged.
Questions
Is a SWIFT code the same as a BIC?
Yes. BIC is the official name (ISO 9362); SWIFT is the network that assigns and publishes the codes. Banks and forms use the two words for the same thing.
Where do I find my bank's SWIFT code?
On the bank's website, on the statement, in the banking app under the account details, or here by searching the bank's name in its country.
Do I need the BIC for a SEPA transfer?
No. Within SEPA the IBAN identifies the account and the bank. The BIC is needed for transfers outside the area or in other currencies.
What is the SWIFT code of an iSwiss Pay account?
Each iSwiss Pay account shows its own coordinates in the app: IBAN and BIC for the euro account, routing and account number for the US dollar account, sort code and account number for the pound account.
