How the gold price is quoted

On international markets gold is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce, the unit used in London and New York. One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams, so the price per gram is the price per ounce divided by that figure. Prices in other currencies are obtained through the exchange rate of the day.

The figure shown here is a spot mid-market price: the reference for a large bar delivered in a vault. Physical gold bought in small sizes carries a premium that covers minting, transport and custody. A gold account that keeps the metal in a professional vault in your name avoids most of that premium.
